Beer Percentage Index Methodology

Here's a rough breakdown for the Beer Percentage Index which I use to create my brackets.  Basically, the BPI uses two elements: Win-Loss Index (WLI) and Human-Computer Index (HCI).  To create the WLI, I create my own "Power Rankings" and rank every team using many of the factors listed below.  There is no "set" formula for my "Power Rankings" so a Top 25 team to me may not be a Top 25 team in the AP poll.  From there, it all falls into place using this fomula: BPI = .5WLI + .5HCI.  A more detailed explanation is below:

Win-Loss Index (WLI = QW – BL + IW/100 – TL/1000000)
• Quality Wins (QW)
     - 5 x Wins Inside Top 25
     - 3 x Wins Inside Top 50
     - 1 x Wins Inside Top 100
• Irrelevant Wins (IW)
     - Wins Outside Top 100
• Bad Losses (BL)
     - 5 x Losses Outside Top 100
     - 3 x Losses Outside Top 50
     - 1 x Losses Outside Top 25
• Tough Losses (TL)
     - Losses Inside Top 25

Obviously, “Quality Wins” significantly help a team’s profile while “Bad Losses” really hurt a team’s profile.  “Irrelevant Wins” and “Tough Losses” are basically used as “Tiebreakers” for teams with similar profiles.  However, neither factor will make or break them.  As of 01/23/10, here are the Top 10 teams by Win-Loss Index:

WLI. School W-L (Conf W-L) (QWP: QW, BLP: BL)
1.   Villanova 17-1 (6-0) (QWP: 25, BLP: 0)
2.   Kansas 17-1 (3-0) (QWP: 21, BLP: 0)
3.   Kansas State 15-2 (3-1) (QWP: 21, BLP: 1)
4.   Syracuse 18-1 (5-1) (QWP: 20, BLP: 0)
5.   Georgetown 14-3 (5-2) (QWP: 22, BLP: 2)
6.   Duke 15-3 (3-2) (QWP: 23, BLP: 3)
7.   Texas 17-1 (3-1) (QWP: 17, BLP: 0)
8.   Temple 16-3 (4-0) (QWP: 20, BLP: 3)
9.   Wisconsin 15-4 (5-2) (QWP: 23, BLP: 6)
10.  Gonzaga 14-3 (4-0) (QWP: 15, BLP: 0)

Human-Computer Index (HCI = Poll + Average(RPI, PR, PR)/100)
• Human Poll Rankings (Poll)
• Human Power Rankings (PR)
• Computer Rating Percentage Index (RPI)

In this case, the human polls are the primary driver of a team’s profile.  For unranked teams, power rankings count for 2/3 of their profile while RPI counts for 1/3.  For the most part, the HCI Index is “Human” driven (which is more than likely “Computer” driven in one way or another).  By definition, my Top 25 should look real similar to the AP Top 25.  Beyond that, it is going to be a mix of power rankings and RPI.  As of 1/23/10, here are the Top 10 teams by Human-Computer Index:

1.   Texas
2.   Kentucky
3.   Kansas
4.   Villanova
5.   Syracuse
6.   Duke
7.   Michigan State
8.   Tennessee
9.   Pittsburgh
10.  Kansas State

Feedback and suggestions are greatly appreciated!
